I would like to redo around my fire place and am having a hard time finding stone i like?

I am remodeling my whole house, and right now I have a very ugly grey tile and mirrors over my fire place (very 1970-1980's look). I would like to put a facing stone around my fireplace. My fireplace is against the wall but it doesn't sit flat. Its sticks out so it’s kind of double sided. like if you draw a straight line then put a v sticking out of the straight line that is my fire place. ______^____ looks like that if that helps? One side is the dinning room/kitchen that is now connected because of the bar cut out we just did in the wall. The other side is the living room. So here is where it gets tricky. we just did a cut out of a bar cut out in a wall the now connects the kitchen and dinning room and since you can see the fire place from there we would like to put the stone under the cut out where the new bar is so when people sit there they do not scuff up the wall but rather the stone would be there, so I can’t have the stone stick out more then 1.5 inches any ideas on some kind of stone I could put around the fire place and under the bar that is not $50 a square foot and doesn't stick out more then 1.5 inches. Also I need it darker stone because the new counter tops in the kitchen are granite called erfly which is dark with green hints and silver and gold speaks. If any one could point me in the right direction maybe even tell me where I could go look at it hold it and see some stone would be great. and sorry if I didn't describe it well enough I am not very crafty minded so its hard for me to tell you what it looks like and camera is broke so can’t show you either.
